I received the following message from Lichess:

Please review the chat rules on lichess.org/page/chat-etiquette.

I have no idea what has happened or what I might have said wrong. Please explain??

4 days ago I said "i eat noobs for breakfast lol" during an hourly tournament. Did I cross the line there?? And why do I only receive this warning after so much time without any context?

Same thing came to me yesterday. I typed in the chat - 'Typical - I lose to a cheater, and it all goes to hell'. I didn't mention any names, didn't accuse anyone, I just stated a fact of my life. Is it too much?

"I lose to a cheater" is a very bold non-fact in most cases though. When you write it, people can look at your recent losses. I'm not sure if this warrants a timeout but it's silly to write in the first place.

For some mods it seems it does cross the line.

Usually we only discuss moderator actions at lichess.org/appeal, but as there seems to be some confusion, I want to offer some clarification.

While I do not have the context at the moment, calling other people noobs is usually considered disrespectful.

You get a timeout when a mod sees this or handles a report. That being said, let me refresh your memory - you got a timeout shortly after you made the offensive message, and this was not four days ago.

This is considered public shaming, no matter if you directly name the other user or not. It not only promotes a climate of mistrust, it is also usually obvious who you mean by going through your games.

It might be debatable if this is spamming in the strongest sense, but in my opinion filling up tournament chats with "gg" adds no real value for anyone, especially in Blitz or Bullet tournaments, when lots of games are played. Personally, I would just skip any of the rather hollow "standard phrases" that you might want to use in individual games altogether. A different perspective is to ask yourself: "if everyone would say this, would that be great?" I think the answer is obvious in that case.

Unfortunately, it seems to be necessary.

(if you do nothing wrong)

Sure. :-) Moderators are humans, too (so I have heard). But your first reaction should always be to reflect on the timeout.
