Absolute Pin
A pin where the piece cannot move because the king would be in check.
Active Piece
A piece with many useful moves and influence on the board.
Advantage
When one player has a better position.
Aggressive Move
A move that attacks or creates threats.
Alekhine’s Gun
A setup where two rooks and a queen line up on the same file.
Analysis
Studying a position deeply to find the best moves.
Anastasia’s Mate
A mating pattern where a knight and rook trap the king near the edge.
Annotation
Written comments added to a chess game.
Arabian Mate
A checkmate using a rook and knight working together.
Armageddon
A tiebreak game where Black wins if the game is drawn.
Attack
Trying to create threats against the opponent.
Attacking Chess
A style focused on aggressive play and king attacks.
Attraction
A tactic where a piece is lured to a bad square.
Automatic Move
A move played too quickly without proper thinking.
A-File
The vertical line from a1 to a8.
Advanced Pawn
A pawn pushed far into enemy territory.
Accuracy
How close a move is to the best engine move.
Advantageous Trade
A trade that improves your position.
Arena Tournament
A tournament where players keep getting paired continuously for a set time.
Artificial Castling
Getting the king to safety without actually castling.
Attacker
A piece threatening another piece or square.
Assistant
A piece supporting another piece in an attack or defense.
Active King
A king that participates in the game, usually in the endgame.
Adjacent Files
Files next to each other.
Air
Space for the king to escape checks.
Ambush
A hidden tactical idea or attack.
Amateur
A non-professional chess player.
Analyzed Game
A game that has been reviewed for mistakes and ideas.
Anti-Positional Move
A move that goes against positional principles.
Arbiter
The official who manages a chess tournament. ( Referee )
Attacking Chances
The possibility of launching a successful attack.
Avoidance
Dodging threats, tactics, or dangerous positions.
