[Explained]

As you will have noticed, the Atomic wilderness is teeming with curious creatures. But have you ever wondered how they got their names? For example, what's a ReChesster? Where is JakeStateFarm? And why StealYourKidney?..
Thinking that curiosity never killed a dog, I asked several top players to shed light upon their usernames. Let them speak now!

@ReChesster

my name is just chess and a random re, and the ter is there to make it sound like a person xd

@arinor0109

My username is very simple, it tells all about me. Arinor is a combination of the three first letters from my first name and surname, Arild Norberg, and 0109 is the date when I was born (Swedish system, so the ninth of January. This boring combination is the result of me not knowing that anything else was possible back in the days.

@stinkypotato

I mean it's not much of a story
I was a young lad of the age of 8
and I was making my account on Lichess
and I completely arbitrarily choose stinkypotato
and when people don't want to say stinkypotato they call me stinky or potato

@JudeBaeTorrens

Hi, my name is Jude Torrens I am 16 years old and I have been playing chess since 3 years old. My parents created my Lichess account, so that's why I have my actual name on my acc.

@chrisrapid

Mine is quite simple. I wanted to put something in my nickname that started with "Chris," but I had to think of a complement (there was already a nickname with "Chris"), so I thought about using names of time control games. I concluded that "Rapid" was the best choice for me for a simple reason: even though I don't play this time control game much, for me it's the ideal time control to improve and play well. So basically, I chose the complement to my nickname because of that (note: I didn't put my name because I play fast, but because I like 10+0).

@maxwellssilvrhaMMer

Not much of a story, it’s just based off a beatles song about a serial killer with a silver hammer
If you google maxwell’s silver hammer it should come up

@Vanntos

mi nombre "vannto" viene de un anime que vi hace años

*My username 'vannto' comes from an anime I saw many years ago

@RKROUNIT

Its not like I gave it specific thought, I just made it on the whim

@StealYourKidney

okay yeah weird story
In german the words "Leber" (liver) and "Nehmer" (the one who takes) rhyme
and so i called myself LeberNehmer (The liver taker)
This username has been regularly used by me in other games. Then I've been playing chess on chess.com under the name of "StealYourMemes" ever since 2021 or so. Got deep into atomic, went into lichess. Had to create a new username. Wanted to combine my two funny usernames
but I mistranslated "Leber" (liver) to Kidney😭
So I became StealYourKidney Instead of StealYourLiver (which would've been a nearly perfect translation of LeberNehmer)
Then I added the beans as my flair. Cause they're kidney beans.

@Opabinia

About 10 years ago one of my irl friends introduced me to the extinct organism known as "Opabinia", which lived over 500 million years ago, and I thought it was a really cool. I decided to use it as my username in various places, including eventually lichess.

@sircachetes

it's a pretty simple story
back in 2017 my little brother and I were making our roblox accounts but we had no clue what to name them
so my little brother decided to name his account sircachetes because we had a hamster called sircachetes
then in 2018 we exchanged accounts (I have no clue why) and I've seen sircachetes ever since
sircachetes itself is composed of the words sir and cachetes
cachetes in spanish means cheeks as in the cheeks in your face

@Orcinus_Orca

I'm a wildlife enthusiast and I'm particularly fascinated by the Orcas whose black and white color pattern resemble that of a chess board. While hunting their prey, they don't just use brute force. They strategize and just like every chess player has unique tactics, every Orca family have unique hunting patterns. It feels like Orcas are the apex chess players of the ocean. That's what made me pick my nickname.

@Chembaby

I am just a chemist in real life

@I-WIN-00

Not relay a big story
Ppl usually read ut as I win
But it mean I win 0
I don't win 😔
Plus it looks cool uk?
I spent like 1 hour trying to find a name that looks cool

@RandoomPlayer

When I come up with usernames I usually just try to use some word pun. So for instance my name was adapted from the word “random” and I guess adding an o to make “doom” part of the name sounded reasonable when I made the name, so here I am. I tend to use different usernames for almost every platform though... so there’s no special backstory to my names :p

@accaesar

mine's not that interesting lol
bascially when i first started chess when i was 6 my dad made me this account to play with my grandpa, and my name is alex caesar so he made my username accaesar

@Henk_DeKleerkast

I have a friend called henk_desmeerpiet and he looks buff and in the netherlands we say he is a 'kleerkast' thats why I named this account henk_dekleerkast

@Quasabianth

I use random nickname generator and stopped there bc it sounds funny and also looks solid

@AtomicBlunder

my name is in 2 parts
atomic
and blunder
atomic because i only play atomic chess
blunder because i always blunder a lot

@JakeStateFarm

Since I was a kid, I have always loved the name Jake. This is likely because my cousin, who I thought and still think is hilarious, was named Jake. I named almost all of my stuffed animals Jake and was always using Jake in some way for usernames as well. "Jake1705" and "CommanderJake" are a couple examples of usernames I liked to use as a kid. After I first saw the State Farm commercial featuring Jake from State Farm, I switched over to that username. I started using "JakeStateFarm" probably around 8 years ago, and it has pretty much been the only username I've used since.
When I started Atomic Theory, I figured using JakeStateFarm could get me into some trouble down the road, so I'm trying to pivot to just "JSF", but even if I don't use JakeStateFarm as much in the future, I will still always love the name Jake and the State Farm commercial!

@Njze

there is nothing special to share about my nick, just random letters

@Superprosper

haha if you want to [know], my father created my acc when i was 12yrs because he found it Super that i was practising Chess. My second name was supposed to be a joke but it was Prosper, so he found it cool to made my username by Superprosper haha

@tipau

The first online chess site I played on was Kasparov Chess around 1998. At the time me and my dad shared an account, as we were a similar level. The nickname tipau is an amalgamation of our names 'Tim' and 'Paul'.

A bit later I joined the ICC, the most popular online site at the time. It was just me by then, but I kept the same nickname. In 2002 I learnt atomic and ICC was also the best site for atomic chess at the time (even though there were far fewer players than today). I quickly got good at it and played on other sites to search for strong atomic players, but kept the name tipau wherever I went.

Thank you, everyone who bravely shared their story!
