When playing the Ruy Lopez, you'll eventually come across the Ruy Lopez Classical Defense and if you don't know the main lines you may have a hard time attacking it. By learning the Central Variation of the Classical Defense, you'll easily control the center of the board and stop black from getting any advantage over you.
