What is Creativity?

To ask what creativity is is pointless, or rather the wrong question. It's clear that creativity is the skill and ability to create, but create what? Value. What is value? And that is the crux of all problems, really. You answer that in the right language and you've got the keys to the world.

Chess engines are creative in the direction of the values they have. SF wants to capture your king. That's the value and that is what it will do. And then we complain that engines can't comprehend the beauty of chess. Because "beauty of chess" is a vague description of a web of thousands of basic metrics that we are mostly unconsciously using. If you can mathematically define "beauty of chess", designing the code to generate it is trivial.

Stories got it right from the beginning - where the Word was: say the right logos and you can achieve anything.

Obviously, you are correct; and yet, like others I'll play the language game like others by pretending that novel technology is invaluable (and existing technology is valueless - things like "beauty of chess" apparently haven't been discovered yet).
