Why “fighting for equality“ against the Halloween Gambit if you could just learn a few moves and be a Knight up?

You're absolutely right! Black could play the line where the knight goes back to Ng8. The only downside white's compensation - far ahead on development. I think the line that gets a equality could be better for beginners...

If you really want to give up the knight to avoid trouble, there might be better versions of the same idea, for example

  1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Nc3 Nf6 4. Nxe5 Nxe5 5. d4 Nc6 6. d5 Ne5 7. f4 Ng6 8. e5 Bb4

Yes I also think it is a nice idea if you delay it a bit. And it's also a kind of Refutation if the gambit doesn't give white an advantage if it isn't even really accepted.

And even if you only look at +2000 elo Games (and no bullet) from the Lichess Database the Halloween gambit still has a positive Score for White. So for online games, especially for beginners, giving back the knight is not only a nice idea, it even Scores better
