Yeah! Today I wrote my twentieth Random Thought Post! When starting out these thoughts, I was not sure I would have enough topics to talk about. Twenty posts later and I know that my brain has no trouble generating a bunch of randomness! :-)

I've seen quite a few weird chessboards in a lot of materials (fabrics, wood and even cardboard). I had already tried to make one that would be more convenient to transport than my large wooden chessboard (it's a very large chessboard with hand-carved wood and resin pieces) and more comfortable than my battery-operated chessboard. which is heavy. I took a board of thick cardboard, I carefully traced the 64 squares (using a ruler) and I wrote down the letters from A to H and the numbers 1 to 8 in stylized letters. I put a first coat of neutral paint. I didn't want a black and white chessboard so I made it green and white. to facilitate transport I cut it in the middle and put a system of wires to fold it in half. the problem is that it was difficult to fold in half so I modified things. and for the pieces I was lazy, I got those from the battery-operated chessboard (I had tried to make origami pieces but I feared that a gust of wind could overturn everything)! the problem is that I was afraid of damaging it so I preferred to have a real travel chessboard, this one is made of wood but nevertheless handmade.

I wanted to make an origami chess set too and thought about the same "wind" problem. What I REALLY want someday is a flat and foldable board that I can keep in my pocket as was shown in the Bobby Fisher Movie, "Pawn Sacrifice." He takes a board out of his pocket and it is tri-folded and about the size of a checkbook. I think if I used a piece of metal flashing and felt fabric on top and then designed some flat magnets with the figures drawn on them, I could sew such a thing together... but time to construct this holds me back for now, especially since I am not sure I would like the look enough to make it worth it.

Very interesting!
I'm thinking about everything a 3D printer could do. I would like a chessboard created by a 3D printer because there is a way to put magnets in the squares and pieces, and it can be solid and have a futuristic side!

Cool post. I am already planning to make my own chessboard.

Oh wow! Great! What materials will you use?

I own a 3D printer, so maybe I will use it. I have my own printed chess pieces already (I did this a long time ago).
I did not fully decide/commit to some materials but I want it to be easy to replicate. Probably not wood.

That's so neat! Thanks for sharing!
