Is "Wunderking" a typo or a pun? The German word is Wunderkind, "Kind" meaning "kid".

A pun. The article also invents the term Wunderqueen for a female Wunderkind.

I guess it's the same in all "sports." The training tools and cutting-edge science that kids today have access to are all leagues beyond what anyone had in the past, which is why records continue to be set by young, up-and-coming competitors. We can never know the levels that a Capablanca or Fischer could obtain with modern resources. The nice thing about chess though is that it isn't gatekept by a high cost of entry, unlike golf or tennis or whatever.
