Upon trying the evaluation game, one thing that I immediately see that could make it more helpful is a more continuous scoring system. Currently, it just cuts the evaluations into 5 completely separate categories, and I receive no feedback if the position happened to be close to one of those boundaries and I guessed the wrong side of it (e.g. the eval is 0.6 and I guess that it's balanced, but unfortunately, the boundary of "balanced" is -0.5 to 0.5 exactly). Instead, you could make the player put their evaluation onto a slider, where the distance (maybe the squared distance?) is used to calculate some sort of score. You could then divide that score into categories like "good" or "OK" to give better feedback and a better experience to the player. Technically this wouldn't work with something like Stockfish directly, given how evaluations cannot be very meaningfully compared (how far is +5 from a mate in 11?), but you could use something like win percentages to help make this idea work.

This is really exciting, I'm gonna check Chessboard Magic right away, just wanted to say congratulations!! for this great enterprise.. it would be great if you add deep analyzing tool as well, maybe adding an option of linking Lichess account to Chessboard Magic to analyse using AI powered engine.. with the idea of explaining the position and how it changes with every move.. just like a coach. just a thought .. all the best.

ChatGPT helped for sure (as with most programming today) but alot of the data plumbing and design and final coding / twerking was done by myself

The initial thoughts for the platform was to identify opening mistakes i.e. we play our repertoire of openings and don't realise we have internalised a sub optimal line. However, that is a much tougher and longer project.
I am planning on completing this in the next versions, i.e. combine Lichess and Chess.com games into your profile and then apply some AI to it to show you where you can improve. This is a much longer project though, but I am targeting early next year for an alpha release.

I did initially have a system like I have implemented with guess the elo i.e. users enter a range, however, engines change and it all depends on depth, alot of my early testers did not like that and I realised that beginners and those newer to chess might find it too hard to play, so I opted for a more simple version of the game (5 categories). In my next update to guess the eval, I am going to add the continuation and allow you to play through it. In future versions I am aiming to build an AI to give you more insights into the position, but that will take time.

@HollowLeaf It is a very good website and I adore Guess The Elo; especially how it tells you how far off you were. I just have a couple of questions
- Where are the games from GTE and GTEvaluation from (are tgey lichess or AI or another website
- I feel it would be more interactive with a points system and a leaderboard for each one (I am no coder so I dont know if that is too difficult to implement)
- Do you have a Patreon page?
Many thanks!

GTE and GT eval came from the Lichess database, random sample 5000 games and anonymised them.
-
I initially had a point system, profile, logins and the ability to save and keep a record. I am planning to introduce this in the future.
-
Nope, tried it a little while ago, I might look into it, but it depends on how far I take the app.
