Personalny as a chess fan I would kike to have a choice to bet ant buy myself more fun or just to enjoy the games itself.
I dont see serious threat to chess. More polular sports do well with beting availible.
There is a trick by the author of the article. By using phrase "Gambling Companies" he would like to demonize them. "Investment Companies" or "Beting Companies" wolud be neurtal without negative correlations. The article is clearly one sided. Chess players aren't stupid. They wont be tricked to by this manipulation and won't spend all the money beting.
Probably as chess is mostly marketed as a kids game connected to education, and more used as a 'bait and switch' to get young children interested in using their mind, and then expected to grow out of chess as any game as they get older.
So the main issue, is that the main target audience of chess is children, even elementary school children. So although gambling makes natural sense for adult chess, as many adults from the West (or countries that allow gambling) who still has time for competitive chess is probably target the thrill of gambling. Almost all the experts on promoting chess to adults agree adding gambling is likely the #1 method to grow $$ in competitive adult chess.
But when you advertise at competitive adult events, due to the demographics of the game, they are essentially advertising gambling to children. Although at least in the US, that is the reality with most youth sports, and although their was minor pushback, most professional sports work directly together with gambling companies, and is an integral part of the business model.
So don't think there is an easy answer, as the methods to grow the game in education focusing on elementary school children, and to grow chess among sports and entertainment will directly conflict with each other. The type people supporting chess in education probably want nothing to due with the major advertiser for professional sports, and the people trying to increase the amount of money in chess for professional players are natural allies of sponsorship that is 'dangerous' for children.
