the activity itself is good, it helps developmentally and probably helps with the development of certain neural links (idk i'm not a neuroscientist), however i think it should be kept as an activity for fun rather than pushing them to be "great", i know a few people irl (including kids) who started chess young because their parents wanted them to and are making them compete because their parents want/wanted them to, skipping classes to do so, getting coaches, their entire lives were/are devoted to it. so yes it is good but don't overdo it is all, imo at least.

this is the case for everything though, not just chess. if a kid is good at something and said kid likes it, then continue and be supported, but don't push a child to do things, it's counterintuitive and ends up harming more than helping
