(Suggestion) Chess960 Championship

Other variant teams all have championships.
So why there can't be an unofficial lichess 960 championship? (FWC)
We can do it in diff time contlrols as well. (E.g 2+1, 3+2 5+3)

@nyutixbrother It would be indeed great to have some community championship for Chess960 on Lichess. However, Chess960 has a bit tricky situation compared to other variant teams, such as Crazyhouse (and Crazyhouse World Championship etc, because there are already big and official events for Chess960. So the question of how to label such event would require extra caution.

These official tournaments also raise the bar for prize fund to attract players. Thus, running a community championship would require some prize fund that at least goes beyond what few volunteer organisers can afford with their own personal budget (e.g. the Crazyhouse World Championship we did last year). In other words, I cannot initiate it with my own personal efforts. That being said, if there is a sponsor and / or Lichess has such event on its agenda, I'd happily organise and run it.

Also thanks for the format suggestion you shared in DM with me, feel free to share it here with others for discussion.

(Copied from DMs) I had the idea of hosting a chess960 championship on lichess.
(Registration may be optional)
(Note: the time control for all events is 3+2, but in the future we could do different time controls.
The format would be something like this:

  1. open registration: the registrated will have to agree to the rules etc. Registration will be 21 days.
  2. Poll all registrated people about there timezone.
  3. Make a team and invite all registrated players to join it. Quailifers will be hosted in this team.
Qualifiers: The Main Qualifiers are >1700 arenas lasting 1h. (timezone will be the most easy-to-play according to the poll) 3 players qualifiy from each of the Main Qualifers (there are 5 of those) and there also is an armaggedon qualifier with 3+2 and 1h duration but only the winner qualifiers to the next stage.
that's a total of 16 players. But, 10 more players qualifiy through the U1900 qualifier (3 qualifiers where the podium qualifies and one where only the winner)
and another 6 from 6 qualifiers (where only the winner qualifies) as a last chance to go to the next stage.
So total of 32 players qualifiy to stage 2.
Stage 2 is a double-elimination knockout. Players are seeded 1-32 2-31 etc. In the first round, players play 2 games of one "set", a
position in chess 960, with white and black. Positions are random for every paring.
Then, the upper bracket plays 4 games (2 sets) in the round of 16,
6 games (3 sets) for the quaterfinals,
8 games (4 sets) for semifinals,
and the finals is a 10 game (5 set) match. (GF is also 10 games)
However, top 8 qualifies to stage 3. (Basically you have to be alive in Winners Final/losers round 3 to qualifiy) The losers bracket matches are 2 games (1 set)
    4 games (2 sets)
    6 games (3 sets)
    8 games (4 sets) etc.
Stage 3 is a single-eliminaton knockout, but with a twist. Players are seeded 1-8 2-7 3-6 4-5. After all the players played the quaterfinals, the 4 losing players play a knockout for 5th-8th. The winners of the two matches play for 5th, and the losers for 7th. The quaterfinal is 6 games, 3 sets, the losers KO 4 games, 2 sets. Then the quaterfinal winners play a 8 game, 4 set match. The winners play a 10 game 5 set match for the championship, and the bronze medal match is 8 games 4 sets.
    Timeline:
    Poll ~2 weeks
    Main Qualifiers ~30 days
    U1900 Qualifiers ~19 days
    Armaggedon Qualifiers ~30 days
    Stage 2 ~3 months
    Stage 3 ~30 days

Regading prizes, i get the point, but isin't e.g the prizes for the crazyhouse championship -a few for the lower places and a small reward for qualifing for stage 2 enough inticement? There aren't many 960 prize torunaments.
P.S is there anyone from the lichess team i can contact about this question?
