Best move arrow showing moves that are not the best move.

I recently made a post about how recently Stockfish had been occasionally giving me suboptimal moves in analysis/study, which has basically never happened until a few weeks ago and I've been using analysis almost everyday for about for years and I'm using the most powerful phone I've ever had (Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra). With SF17 enabled, one line on, infinite anaylsis, 7/8 cores and good internet connection.

Sometimes it shows a move that is just a little worse than the best move, but others it shows mistakes and even game losing blinders.

Tonight I realized that when this occurs, the "best move arrow" is showing a move that is not the best move in the engine line that it also shows. I took a screen shot and it shows how the best move arrow is not the same move as the move in the red circle

Anyone have any idea what could be causing this?

Try to disable "Improved best move arrow" : https://siderite.dev/blog/lichess-tools---user-manual/#betterBestArrow in LiChess Tools preferences.

This feature is taking information from local analysis to update the best arrow move for the PREVIOUS MOVE. The default Lichess behavior is to take it only from computer server analysis. Normally LiChess Tools should never set the best move if the local analysis is shallower than 15 ply, but maybe there is a bug there.

@Jackypaper824 , contact me privately to see if there is something I can do.

@Jackypaper824 sent me a printscreen. The issue seems, indeed, to be a weird bug in how the arrows of the computer evaluation lines are displayed:

I think I've got it! It's also related to this: https://lichess.org/forum/lichess-feedback/does-anyone-know-what-im-pressing-to-make-this-pop-up

If you mouseover a line in the computer evaluation, then the arrows disappear and you only get the move that you have the mouse over. You are on a tablet or phone, but "something" is generating these mouseover events.

That's where you should be looking, @Jackypaper824 !

I'm gonna be honest, when I read this comment when you first posted it I didn't really understand what you were saying. Just a few minutes ago, I believe I figured out what the issue was on my own so I came back to tell you but now after re-reading what you said.. I believe you were correct! Or at least partially correct about the mouse over.

So say I'm working on a study. I make my move. For my opponents move, I will generally play whichever is the most popular for players in past games on Lichess, so I click the top move in the explorer.

Somehow, after that move is played, the top move in the explorer is remaining highlighted (or "mouse overed") for the next move. So it's showing the arrow for the most possible move rather than the actual best move arrow, which explains why the picture I posted has the best move in the actual line. Now I imagine a decent amount of time it's the same move or neglible in evaluation difference so it only sticks out when the most popular move is much worse objectively than the engine line.

So I'll just have to manually enter the moves rather than clicking the move in the explorer which is no big deal. Unless it gets fixed but it's no trouble.

I hope this solves it because I was getting pretty angry at the thought of the best smart phone on the market being the cause

Thanks for the help!
