This is why some people like chess.com, since lichess does not have these variants.
Also more Sub-forums will help, as chess.com has a lot,
I prefer Lichess because of the communication services here, and i am happy its totally free, Patrons also should have some advantage, like a exclusive variant for patrons.

also im pretty sure variants in lichess are a lot more popular than variants in chess.com in number of players/active players at a given time/number of people who play the variant actively

I think chess.com does have both of those, but more popular on Lichess.

Chess.com has atomic but no rk. Also no new variants will be added because not enough people would play so its not worth it.
