About me

I'm Benjamin Falcon, FIDE Master from Argentina with a peak FIDE rating of 2341. I've spent 17 years competing at the highest level (including World Championships, Pan-Americans, and South Americans) and over 7 years specializing in coaching, which is something I genuinely love.
As a competitive player, I've always been drawn to positional chess and the art of small advantages (it's where I've been strongest and where I enjoy the game most). My favorite players have always been Karpov and Capablanca, and among modern players, I've long admired the chess of Michael Adams.

Playing experience

I have been playing competitive chess for over 17 years. Three-time Argentine Youth Champion and medalist at both Pan-American and South American Championships.
I competed in 4 World Championships (Greece 2010, Brazil 2011, Slovenia 2012, Uruguay 2017), 3 Pan-Americans (Brazil 2010, Peru 2012, Uruguay 2016), and 5 South Americans (Bolivia 2013, Uruguay 2014, Bolivia 2015, Chile 2016, Argentina 2019).
My best result was finishing 24th in the World U-16 Championship in Uruguay 2017. I was also ranked 2nd in Latin America U-18 as of the FIDE December 2018 rating list.

Teaching experience

Since 2019 I've coached students of all ages and levels, from complete beginners to competitive players. I've worked with students from Argentina and internationally, and every single one has improved. I have always had great satisfactions with their progress. My classes are very interactive and I enjoy teaching them. Finally, I also think that your weaknesses are specific, so your improvement should be too.

Other experiences

I had the pleasure of coaching Sergio "Kun" Agüero, one of the greatest football players of his generation.
I am currently finishing a degree in Economics at the National University of Rosario (Argentina).

Teaching methodology

My lessons are highly interactive and built around each student's specific weaknesses and needs, covering all phases of the game: openings, middlegame, and endgame.
Working on our most common mistakes and weak points is the real key to improvement. I place strong emphasis on positional understanding, and at the core of this is pawn structure. This point is strongly connected with our repertoire. We need to understand the typical structures, middlegame plans, exchanges, breaks and what kind of endgames derived of the opening are benefitial for us.
Therefore, opening preparation is also essential, but it goes beyond memorizing moves. A solid repertoire must fit your style, and you need to understand the ideas behind each line so you can think for yourself when the theory runs out.
Finally, I also work on the psychological side of chess, which I consider crucial, especially in tournament situations where pressure and mindset can define the result.
