How to stalemate lost positions (it's easy)

StrategyTacticsAnalysisEndgameChess
If the game's lost anyway, sometimes it pays to just throw away all your pieces, push your pawns as far as they can go, and then move your king around the board.

Then, pray for a stalemate.

Here's an example from one of my games:

https://lichess.org/gnpHv81U/white

As you can see, on move 57, I played Nb6 to throw away the knight, my opponent grabbed the free knight, and my last pawn was as far as it could go.

The reason that works is that if you can't move any pieces, including your king, then it's a stalemate. If your opponent has overwhelming material advantage, like a strong queen that's controlling tons of squares, plus rooks and whatnot, and you can only move your king, then the chance of checkmate increases, but so do the chances of stalemate.

I once stalemated two games in a day by doing this.

As a last note, I just wanted to add that I didn't read this technique anywhere. It's just something I figured out, and therefore might not be a legitimate tactic. Also, my game is a 1500 level game. So if a stronger player thinks my play was stupid or the technique is misguided, then by all means, leave a note.
