Puzzles from games of players
A dive into a Lichess feature that not so many people know about
How it works?
This feature lets you veiw and access all of the puzzles that Lichess has created from your games. You can also type the username of another person and click "search puzzles" button to see their set of puzzles.
Puzzles are sorted by rating from highest to lowest. Their rating varies based on how well other people solve them.
You can click on any one of them to visit the page of the puzzle and try to solve it.
Puzzles are created semi-automatically. They get created from the games that you've analysed with computer analysis. So, it might take a while for them to get generated after the game is played (the lowest time I saw is 1.5 months and the longest is 6 months)
Both players of the game get "credited" if a puzzle gets generated from it.
Where to access it?
On the website you can open it by clicking in this order, starting from the main page: Puzzles > Puzzle themes > From my games
Or you can open this link https://lichess.org/training/of-player
Sadly, at the time of writing this blog, it is not yet available on the mobile app of Lichess. But it's not the end of the day for mobile users. They can still open the website in their browser and follow the steps above.
Use cases of the feature
Here is a list of things I found this feature being useful for:
- Personalized training
- Motivation to play and analyse your games
- Compete with others in how much puzzles you got
- Explore the properties of Lichess puzzles
- Make you happy when you get a puzzle to your name
My experience
I found out about his feature after about a year of playing on Lichess, and I was pleasantly surprised to find out that 6 puzzles were generated from my games! In all honesty, this feature became my favourite in a matter of minutes and I could not forget about it since. Something about other people solving puzzles made from my games made me feel the purest form of joy. I was genuinely happy.
After that I got the biggest burst of motivation I've ever had just in order to get more puzzles: I began studying more openings, playing against even stronger opponents, deeply analysing almost all of my games in hopes of getting more puzzles. All of it lasted for about a month until I learned that it's a long process, which finally calmed me down. Altrough I still learn new things so my games and puzzles were high-quality. I check this page daily to this day and currently sit at 21 puzzles and a new highscore in rapid. I think in the end it had a positive effect on me and I am really happy that I found out about it.
I really hope this blog will help you. Thank you for reading it. Have a good day!
