Hourly Rapid Arena - 4th Place!

AnalysisChessPuzzleOpeningEndgame
My Hourly Rapid Arena Adventure.

Hello. I recently played the Hourly Rapid Arena. I will annotate the highlights and important moments in the Arena for you.

The Rapid Arena pairs players continuously. The goal is to win the most points. A regular win gives you 2 points. And a draw 1 point. Beserking is where you have half the time on your clock, but you get an extra point for winning. After a 2 win streak, your wins are now worth 4 points and Beserk is worth 5.

A good strategy in this arena is to beserk against lower rated opponents, and play fast to finish the game quicker so you can play more games overall. More games overall = more potential points.

This blog will chronicle my Hourly Rapid Arena adventure with the most interesting games annotated.

Game 1: I played against the Catalan as Black. Got into some typical light squared bishop troubles but then equalized:

Game 2: I won a piece as White in the Petrov opening for an easy conversion.

Game 3: Faced the Evan's Gambit as Black. Declined the gambit and played for an attack:

Game 4: Played the Grand Prix attack as White:

Game 5: Played Caro-Kann. Got into losing position. Then won because opponent blundered a tactic on the e5 square. Converted with 2R vs B+R.

Game 6: Played Closed Sicilian. Positional play around the e5 square and then a Kingside attack:

Game 7: Faced the King's Gambit as Black. Accidentally declined Gambit because I was blitzing out opening moves. A pawn up but concerned about my knight getting trapped on c3. After tense standoff I win a pinned piece.

Game 8: Play against the Bird Opening. Play the Bg4 line and opponent adopts a Stonewall structure. Opponent goes for Kingside attack which is unsound but I don't know what to do. They get winning position but overlook the winning move and I get counterplay against their King:

I think at this point I thought I was far away from 1st, but then the gap closed and I was about 5 points away. So I had a chance.

Game 9: Played the Four Knights Defense as White. Went for a Kingside attack with Nxg5:

After this game I saw the leader had gotten a big lead.

Game 10: Played offbeat opening. Got queenside pressure with b4-b5 and a Rf2-a2 rook lift. Then obtain connected passed pawns:

At this point I took a break for 10 mins as the leader got up to 39 and I was 10 points away. There was only 20 mins left.

Then I decided to play one more game as I saw I could reach 3rd maybe.

Game 11: Played Caro-Kann and got crushed brutally in Kingside attack in 22 moves.

But even if I won, it wouldn't change things as I was on 29 and a beserk win would only get me to 32. After the game I saw 3rd was on 34 after they won their game.

So that was the Hourly Rapid Arena experience. I narrowly missed a podium finish but that's ok.

Congrats to @s3mml3r for the Winning the Rapid Arena! And to @polor2206 and @MER_Chess for 2nd and 3rd!

One day, I will win! I just have to keep trying!

See you next time on Rapid Arena Chronicles!
